Sarah W, age 6, comes from CA to work with Don for 5 days- Day 2

Day 2: Thursday 30 June 2011

1. Sarah spent a lot of time trying to double each length of the dog and figuring out how may cubes would make the larger dog.

3. Sarah uses the "Genuine What’s It" to make an ellipse (Earth moves about sun in an elliptical

orbit with sun at one focus of the ellipse).

4. Sarah graphed  x-y=2 ending with (1,⁻1) and 1 - ⁻1 = 2 because this point (1,⁻1) is on the “yellow brick road”  and (⁻1,⁻3) gives ⁻1-⁻3=2 and (⁻1,⁻3) is on the “yellow brick road”. Notice I can now raise the negative sign! Textbooks today still have it wrong (takes more time and is more expensive?); even Kahn Academy does it wrong the last time I looked!

2. Guess the number game. (Sarah made the 5 cards). Don showed Sarah how the game is played. We never got to the binary nature of the cards and why the game works; see Sheri’s work for this.

  1. 5.Sarah worked on the Square Hanayama puzzle:
